ST. JOSEPH THE WORKER MUMBI CATHOLIC PARISH

Local Churches

Church History

Catholic faith in Murang’a was brought by the missionaries who settled and started their first mission at Tuthu in 1902. From there they spread to Njoguini, later called St Mary’s, in 1904. On the eastern side of St Mary (earlier known as Local 11 and Local 20), it is clear from records that there were Catholics baptized as early as 1919 and 1920. Some of these were;
  • Cosmo Ratago – Baptism no. 233 on 7/6/1919 at Bomani (behind Total Petrol Station)
  • Enrico Kieru – Baptism no. 314 on 31/1/1920 at Station
Before the creation of Murang’a Diocese, St Mary, now known as Sacred Heart Cathedral Parish was under the Ecclesiastical Province of Nyeri and had several local communities. Among the first on this side were;
  • Kambirwa, started in 1945
  • Githuuri in 1958,
  • Mirira in 1956
  • Gikuu
  • Mumbi in 1974
